Description

Przeworsk - a town in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in Przeworsk County, in the Rzeszowskie Foothills, on the Mleczka River, by the E40 international road, a former seat of the Polish magnates.

A private nobleman's town founded in 1394 was situated in the 16th century in the Ruthenian Province. In the years 1975-1998 it was in the Przemysl Province. It is a member of the Association of Polish Cities.

The town has 15,733 inhabitants (31 December 2010)[4]. The patron saint of the city is Saint Anthony of Padua.

Przeworsk was first mentioned in 1281. The town was founded in 1393 at the intersection of important trade routes, in the place of a former Ruthenian stronghold. Thanks to numerous privileges and the establishment of a judicial district in 1470, Przeworsk became the second municipal center of the Przemyśl land and hosted nobility courts. For years, the city played a role of an important center of economic life, mainly crafts (weaving) and trade. Numerous invasions of the Tatar, Cossack, Russian and Swedish armies caused the decline of Przeworsk. The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries saw an intensified development of the town connected with the establishment of the Lubomirski entail estate (1825), the construction of a sugar factory (1895) and a railway junction.

Nowadays Przeworsk is a local service and industrial center as well as a transportation hub where important communication routes and three railway lines intersect. The town is an administrative centre of the county - it is the seat of the Starost's Office, the District Court, the District Public Prosecutor's Office, the District Police Headquarters and the National Fire Brigade, among others.

There are about 60 historic buildings in the town. The most important are: Gothic defensive monasteries: Bernardine Monastery (Church of St. Barbara) and the House of the Holy Sepulchre (Basilica with the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre), Town Hall, Classicist Lubomirski Palace, Baroque convent of the Daughters of Charity, the only living open-air museum in Poland "Pastewnik".
