How to start streaming (OBS, stream key)

To broadcast on LookCam you need streaming software (we recommend the free OBS Studio) and the ingest details from your creator dashboard: the server address and your private stream key. Here's how, step by step.

Download and install OBS

Download OBS Studio from the developer's website and install it on your computer. OBS is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Find your stream key

In your creator dashboard, open “Stream settings”. Copy the ingest server address and your stream key. Your stream key is private — never share it publicly or show it on screen. If it ever leaks, use the “Generate new key” button.

Configure OBS

In OBS, open “Settings → Stream”, choose “Custom” as the service, and paste in the ingest server address and stream key. In the “Output” tab, set a sensible bitrate — typically 6000 kbps for 1080p60, or around 3500 kbps for 720p, depending on your upload bandwidth.

IP cameras, PTZ, and RTMP

If you're sharing a fixed location (a church, town square, or nature spot), you can broadcast directly from an IP/PTZ camera that supports RTMP — enter the ingest server address and stream key into it, just like in OBS. Cameras without RTMP support should be connected through a computer running OBS (source: a capture device or an RTSP stream). To broadcast from your phone, use the mobile app.

24/7 stream stability

For continuous broadcasts, make sure you have a stable connection (wired is best), backup power (a UPS), and automatic recovery after network drops. Set your bitrate with some headroom relative to your upload bandwidth, and monitor your stream status in the creator dashboard.

Chat and moderation

Chat is available as soon as your stream starts. In the creator dashboard you can enable followers-only mode, message delay, and auto-moderation. You can also add moderators to help keep things in order during your broadcast.

Your first test

Click “Start Streaming” in OBS. After a few seconds your channel will show as LIVE and appear in the listing. Check the preview on your channel page, keep an eye on latency and picture quality, and adjust your OBS settings if needed.
